CAMPAIGNING

The Chamber acts on behalf of the entire membership as the local 'voice for business' in the media and at local, national and international levels.

We articulate the views of members, individually and collectively, to not only local agencies such as Milton Keynes Council and Aylesbury Vale District Council, but also increasingly to regional and national organisations.

Being part of the British Chambers of Commerce network we have a strong lobbying influence on government decisions effecting businesses. Our representation activity also includes a broad programme of workshops and seminars on local and topical business issues.

There is a range of issues that the Chamber seeks to take up on behalf of members collectively and sometimes on an individual basis. Some of these include:

  • Transport

  • The growth of Milton Keynes

  • The labour market

  • Information Communication Technology (ICT)

  • Business crime

  • Travellers

  • Royal Mail

As part of this service, we represent members' views and concerns on a wide range of issues, by advising members and taking up their concerns with the relevant agencies. These include the performance of telecom providers, public utilities and the profusion of unsolicited mail, 'rogue' mail and invoices from abroad for entries into directories.

Consultations

The Chamber is recognised as the 'voice of business' by the local authorities and, increasingly, the regional development agency, South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). We receive a wide range of consultation documents from these sources and seek the views of members to develop our responses and, where necessary, policies.

At a regional level, the Chamber is working with other Chambers of Commerce in the south-east, to develop stronger links with SEEDA and ensure the 'voice of business' is clearly heard and understood.

We are able to influence national policy through our governing body, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and members have the opportunity to influence future legislation that will have a direct impact on business. National and European consultations are fed through the Chamber movement for comment and debate. Members' views are then fed back to the policy unit of the BCC, which campaigns nationally on behalf of the 135,000 members of its accredited Chambers.

Influencing Local Policies

In addition to representation and policy issues, the Chamber makes a major contribution to Partnership working at both local and regional levels. Formal partnership involvement includes:

  • Milton Keynes Economic Partnership
  • Buckinghamshire Economic Partnership

  • Milton Keynes Crime & Community Safety Partnership

  • Local area partnerships including Central Milton Keynes, Bletchley, Buckingham and Wolverton

  • Milton Keynes Police Area Community Consultative Group

Surveys
The Chamber sends out regular surveys to establish views on key issues impacting on Milton Keynes and North Bucks business. These include:

  • a Business Burdens Survey

  • an International Survey

  • the Quarterly Economic Survey (QES)

The British Chambers of Commerce's Quarterly Economic Survey was established in 1985 and is the largest and most detailed of its kind. It brings together, for the purposes of region by region comparison, results obtained from surveys carried out within the nations and regions of Britain by individual Chambers of Commerce and their associations.

The survey is one of the UK's leading economic indicators of grassroots business performance. It regularly features in the Bank of England's Quarterly Inflation Report and is a key barometer used by the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee in its interest rate deliberations.
